VanEck cancels plans for Lido staked Ethereum ETF

VanEck has told the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that it no longer intends to bring a Lido staked Ethereum exchange-traded fund to market, according to a report from crypto.news. The asset manager filed on October 14 to pull the registration statement that would have supported the product, ending an effort that had been closely watched by investors interested in liquid staking.

The filing was made under Rule 477, the SEC procedure that allows an issuer to withdraw a registration statement that has not yet gone effective. According to the report, VanEck's request covers the original registration statement and its amendments, and confirms that the planned securities offering never became effective. The underlying filing remains identifiable in SEC records under registration number 333-290918.

The product in question would have been tied to Lido's liquid staking token for Ethereum, commonly referred to as stETH. Liquid staking protocols let holders stake a proof-of-stake asset such as ether while receiving a transferable token that represents the staked position. That design has made liquid staking tokens popular in decentralized finance, but it has also raised questions in the United States about how such instruments should be treated under securities law and how they can be packaged inside traditional fund wrappers.

Those questions are visible in the paper trail. The report notes that VanEck's October 2025 prospectus addressed SEC staff guidance on staking and stated that the sponsor believed its planned staking activities were consistent with the staff's interpretation. The same prospectus acknowledged that a different regulatory interpretation could create legal risks for the proposed fund and for its service providers, a standard but notable disclosure for a first-of-its-kind structure.

The original application had been welcomed within the Lido ecosystem, which had publicly supported the proposed investment product when it was announced. A U.S.-listed fund referencing a liquid staking token would have offered brokerage account holders exposure to staked ether without requiring them to interact directly with a staking protocol or manage wallets and keys.

The withdrawal appears to be narrow in scope. Per the report, the October 14 document concerns the Lido Staked Ethereum ETF registration specifically and does not request withdrawal of VanEck's other cryptocurrency fund applications. The firm had pursued more than one staking-linked product during the same period: in August 2025 it submitted a registration statement for a proposed ETF linked to JitoSOL, a liquid staking token associated with the Solana network, seeking exposure to staked SOL through a traditional investment structure.

VanEck has not, based on the available reporting, given a public explanation for the decision, and the filing itself is a procedural document rather than a statement of strategy. Issuers withdraw registration statements for many reasons, including changes in product design, timing, structuring considerations, or evolving regulatory guidance. Readers should be cautious about drawing broader conclusions from a single filing.

Still, the move is a data point in an ongoing debate over whether staking yield, and especially liquid staking derivatives, can be delivered through regulated U.S. fund products. Several issuers have explored staking features for ether and other proof-of-stake assets, and the outcomes of those filings are likely to shape what products eventually reach American investors.
