The euro gave up earlier gains against the US dollar on Friday, October 30, 2026. FXStreet reported that EUR/USD turned lower as the dollar rebounded during a period of heightened volatility across financial markets. The move came even though eurozone growth data was stronger than expected and European Central Bank officials had made hawkish remarks.
The US Dollar Index (DXY) tracks the dollar against a basket of six major currencies. According to FXStreet, it fell to 101.53 during the session and then recovered to above 102.00. FXStreet's table of daily moves showed the dollar strongest against the euro at the time of writing.
FXStreet said the dollar's downside remained cushioned. It pointed to higher energy prices linked to developments in the Middle East, which keep inflation risks elevated. It also said the Federal Reserve remains on a hawkish path. The outlet added that the dollar had traded higher against most of its peers over the week. The week began with expectations of a hawkish Federal Open Market Committee decision on Wednesday.
On the euro side, FXStreet described the upbeat eurozone GDP figures and the hawkish ECB comments as unable to provide lasting support. Stronger growth and a more hawkish central bank can sometimes support a currency. In this case the euro lost its early gains once the dollar steadied.
The ECB backdrop comes from the previous day's policy meeting. CNBC, citing Reuters reporting, said the euro had hit its lowest level since May 2025 on Thursday after the ECB left interest rates unchanged. The ECB indicated that higher bond yields had tightened financial conditions. According to that report, this initially led traders to reduce their expectations for a rate hike in December.
CNBC also reported that ECB President Christine Lagarde said policymakers had debated whether a rate hike was appropriate. That comment lifted the euro in late trading on Thursday. Lagarde also announced she would step down from the ECB in February, eight months earlier than scheduled. Earlier on Friday, CNBC said the euro was up 0.16% at $1.1199, its third straight daily gain. The dollar index was down about 0.2% at that point, largely because of the pickup in the euro and the yen.
The backdrop on Friday was a fresh wave of selling in AI-related shares. CNBC said this had triggered demand for safe-haven assets, and falling US Treasury yields added pressure on the dollar. FXStreet's later report showed that the dollar had recovered from its intraday lows by the time of its writing.
The day shows how many forces are acting on EUR/USD at once. These include eurozone economic data, ECB communication, Fed expectations, energy prices and swings in equity and bond markets. A currency pair can reverse direction within a single session when those signals pull against each other. Nothing in the reports suggests that any one of these factors will determine where the pair goes next.
